IES JORGE MANRIQUE HIGH SCHOOL – PALENCIA

Though the present building of IES Jorge Manrique of Palencia is from 1915, our history goes back to the middle of the 19th century, 1845, when our school was founded in the old convent of Saint Buenaventura, not very far from the Gothic cathedral, to cover the gap that the city had on secondary education.

It had a very hard beginning. The former second headmaster of the centre, the clergyman Mr. Inocencio Rodríguez, requested County Council economic aid in order to be able to establish a boarding school for pupils coming from a rural background, and to compete with the prestigious Diocesan Seminar located in the same city.
The precariousness of its deteriorated facilities (the convent was built in 1603) and the insufficiency of space for the new needs derived from the Moyano Law of 1857, made authorities think about a new building, in accordance with the tendencies of the new century.

That is how the Jorge Manrique was set up, with the name of “General and Technical Institute”. Work began in 1908, according to architect Jerónimo Arroyo's plans, and in 1915, the building was finished and inaugurated by the Minister of Public Education, Mr. Saturnino Esteban Collantes.

This stunning building, which follows the guidelines of Viennese modernism,  and was placed next to the park of Queen Isabel II, has been and still is one of the main icons of Palencia city; it is also known as “the old institute” by everybody. Its outstanding features include its wide library, with some bibliographical funds proceeding from the former disentailed convents, its impressive entry with a magnificent staircase (the envy of other schools), as well as its auditorium, with some beautiful stained glasses proceeding from the Mauméjean Frères House of Paris and, the clock tower (where an ancient astronomical observatory was located).
In 1940 our high school was named after Jorge Manrique, in honour of this celebrated Renaissance poet, on occasion of his 5th century birth.

Throughout the years there have been prominent figures in our classrooms, who have obtained reputation not only on a provincial level but also nationally and internationally, such as: Alejandro Casona -the playwright-, Gómez de la Serna –the writer-, Trinidad Arroyo -the doctor-, Felipe Ruiz, Becerro de Bengoa and Julio Valdeón -the historians-, Francisco Vighi, the poet and engineer… and others.
It is one of our eminent figures, Doctor Dª Trinidad Arroyo, who leaves a fund of money for the provision of scholarships to those pupils less favoured economically.
Nowadays, both secondary education and grammar school, as well as some professional training courses are given in our classrooms. There are three shifts: Morning, Evening and Open Teaching (for those who can not attend regular) classes, with a total of 1,562 pupils and 100 teachers.

We might emphasize, as the signs of identity of our school, that it has always been a pioneer in the technological field in its classrooms and laboratories, as well as an impeller in language teaching. English, German and French constitute our main appeal. The impulse given to the student exchanges with the countries that speak the above mentioned languages (the USA, England, Germany and France) and the participation in projects of international relevance, as Comenius, are a motive of pride for the whole school community.
